Our School

Values and Ethos

At New Park Primary School, we are proud to promote British values.

Throughout the year, the school has daily assemblies which uphold traditional values of empathy, respect and tolerance. We also have a weekly whole school assembly focused around British values. These values are also taught within SEAL, PSHE and RE lessons. At New Park, we believe the following statement from the DfE to be paramount in the understanding and delivery of our values and ethos;

“to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” The DfE

Our children have the opportunity to have their voices heard through formal structures, such as the School Council and Pupil Interviews. This year, the elected School Council will be responsible for ordering new playground equipment and for writing our school rules.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws and rules are consistently reinforced throughout school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school assemblies. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws and their individual responsibilities through SEAL lessons. The school council’s rules are displayed in every classroom across the school and are understood by all adults and children.

Individual Liberty

Pupils are actively encouraged to make the right choices within a safe and supportive environment. They are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms safely, for example through e-Safety lessons in ICT or from visits by the NSPCC or Police to teach children about personal safety.

Mutual Respect

The school promotes respect for others and this is reiterated through our PSHE lessons, circle time and our school rules (chosen by the School Council) as well as our behaviour policy. Mutual respect is also promoted through our whole-school approach to Behaviour for Learning.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

At New Park, we promote tolerance of different faiths and beliefs through assemblies and lessons on RE and PSHE. It is vital that pupils understand their place in a culturally diverse society by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. As a result, we will hold events such as a Diwali celebration and invite parents to take part in workshops. In addition to this, we promote tolerance through our work on anti-bullying.
